Sunday Times Prep School of the Year 2013-14

Year 3 Service

Our Liturgy today was prepared for the whole school by the two classes in Year 3.

The girls had been studying in detail the Bible story found in Luke’s Gospel passage 19, verses 1 – 10, of Zacchaeus who, “climbed a tree and found God”?! Zacchaeus was a dishonest, greedy tax collector who had climbed a sycamore tree to get a better view of Jesus preach when he visited his town of Jericho; he was a short man and disliked by many because of the manner in which he lived his life. However, in front of all the crowds, Jesus called for Zacchaeus to come down from the tree and announced he would take supper with him and his family which displeased some of the crowd who thought Zacchaeus was a sinner and did not deserve this great honour! Immediately, Zacchaeus renounced all his worldly goods and possessions and pledged to give back to those he had taken from. Jesus had recognised his humanity and forgiven him.

The girls retold the parable in a lovely little role play and shared its message that God will forgive anyone who wants reconciliation with Him and in their life; we only have to ask and be sorry. We all know it is difficult to be kind and loving to everyone all the time, and we do stray from the right path or make silly choices, but if we look out for these times, recognise them, and seek forgiveness, we can learn from them and receive God’s love once more. The girls illustrated this by writing a ‘wrong doing’ of theirs on a white pebble in felt pen and then dropped this in a bowl of ordinary water – in no time at all the pebble was washed clean as the writing wore off and disappeared. It was a reflective and joyful service to see and share in, and we were delighted to see so many family members were able to join us in our worship.
