Sunday Times Prep School of the Year 2013-14

We have a winner!

When Mrs Fernandes issued details of a coding competition our girls could enter she was unaware of the huge interest and success it would generate. In their Computing lessons all the girls from Reception upwards have begun to learn about coding and writing applications,'apps' - this makes their learning very up-to-date as it reflects trends and practices in the design and computing technology worlds.

The competition was to design an app and Amelia in Y2P was chosen as the overall winner for her creation of 'Escape the Moon Monster'! In this you have to use various keys on the computer to move the character out of danger. The company, Discovery Education, wrote to Mrs Fernandes and were delighted with all our entries; a spokeswoman for them commented,

"I had the pleasure of playing all the entries and I was particularly overwhelmed by the level your KS1 pupils are working at. All the entries from your school actually made it to the shortlist which was sent to our judging panel - this included Cindy Moss who has been recognised as one of the top 100 women in STEM. What stood out for me was every app was different. Often with entries to our competition you see similarities in design and the code functionality but every app that the school entered demonstrated different skills".

High praise indeed! We were delighted to welcome into school, and our Assembly, a representative from the partnership office of Discovery Education came to present Amelia with her prize and congratulate all the girls. Well done everyone and Mrs Fernandes for facilitating such great learning.
