What kind of sports can I do at Holy Cross?

There is so much going on in the PE department that it is sometimes hard to keep track of all of the events, clubs and practices. Somehow the PE department and the girls seem to be able to take up all the challenges that sport has to offer and come up with some terrific results.

Years 5 and 6

Development Squads

The year 5 and 6 netball development squads are run by Mrs Andrew on a Monday after school in Autumn and Spring. These sessions demand a high level of skill, vision, decision-making, concentration, commitment and fitness with the aim being excellence in netball. Holy Cross Preparatory is the most successful prep school in the area for netball and hockey. In the last years Small Schools Netball Tournaments, the year 6 team finished 2nd, Year 5 finished 1st Year 4 finished 2nd.

Nationally the girls also do very well. Our best Under 11 netball result is 2nd in the IAPS Nationals for England. In March 2010 we finished in the top 12 out 55 schools in the South East England Region.

The girls are mainly made up of students who have been selected for the A and B teams. However, there is room for others who show improvement over the two terms in PE classes and during break time practices. The girls here are given as many opportunities as possible to experience match play, whether through inter-school or inter-house matches which are held at least every term.

In Summer a rounders squad is selected to train.  The U11 IAPS team finished 3rd in the country in Summer 2009 and qualified for the second round against Windlesham in 2010.

Hockey Clubs

In Autumn and Spring, the year 5 Hockey Club runs on a Tuesday after school, while the year 6 one runs on Thursdays. Mrs Kapadia is a trained PE teacher who was employed this year. From 3.45pm until 5.00pm, the girls in year 5 and 6 develop their hockey skills and fitness in a fun and enjoyable way. Everyone is welcome, no matter what their level of hockey.

These clubs certainly paid off last year with some superb results...the year 4 girls ranked 2nd, year 5 girls ranked 3rd and the year 6 girls ranked 4th  in their first attempt in playing in the small schools tournaments against 12 other schools from around Wimbledon, Putney, Kingston and Barnes!

Multi Sports Clubs in Summer

In Summer the Year 5 Hockey Club becomes a multisport club and the year 6 club becomes the year 4 multisports club.  Again , every girl is welcome no matter what their skill level.  The main objective is being active and enjoyment.  Sports covered may include:

  • Rounders
  • Lacrosse
  • Volleyball
  • Netball
  • Cricket

These club gives the girls an opportunity to play other sports in a fun way while learning and maintaining their skill levels.

Cross Country Club

Girls from year 3 right through to year 6 arrive on the field keen to expend energy on Tuesday and Thursday at little break. The girls run 650m in the autumn term and compete for places in the cross country team or come down for fun and fitness. This is an extremely popular club that is open to everyone who loves to run. As the girls become fitter in the spring term, the distance is increased to 1000m. After running, the girls go to play in the playground and eat their snacks with their friends.  2010 has seen our most successful year to date.  Holy Cross finished 1st in the coveted Notre Dame Cross Country Competition beating the Surrey Champions Notre Dame.

Break-time Practices

All year 5 and 6 teams practice during their little break. As matches approach, Mrs Andrew and Mrs Withers get the five year 5 and 6 teams to practice for their matches or tournaments. Each team is put through their paces in an effort to improve skill levels, speed and tactical play.

Football Club

Football skills and fun are the objective of this club. Our Fulham coaches come in with the aim being to get the girls fit, learn the skills and rules involved in football and to get them up to a standard that would enable them to play a match. All the girls thoroughly enjoy the sessions and always look forward to Friday afternoons.

Tennis Club

The tennis club is open to year 4, 5 and 6 girls. The girls greatly enjoy this club on Fridays after school. The outside coaches make learning new skills and improving existing ones fun and interesting.

Hip Hop Club

On Tuesday mornings from 7.45am until 8.15am there is a club for girls to do hip hop or street dance.  It is extremely popular and fantastic for the girls' fitness and rhythm!  All year 5 and 6 girls are welcome.

Years 3 and 4

Netball and Rounders Club

The girls at Holy Cross adore netball and can often be seen shooting goals and passing a ball around in their own break times. For this reason, there is a year 3 club on Wednesdays and Fridays and a year 4 club on Tuesdays and Thursdays at lunchtime. We offer two days so that the girls are able to go to choir practice, orchestra or chess on a Tuesday and do netball on Thursday if they wish.  In the Summer term netball is swapped for rounders.

Cross Country Club

Girls from year 3 right through to year 6 arrive on the field keen to expend energy on Tuesday and Thursday at little break. Sports Club

This is a very popular club. Like the year 2 club, it is run by the Fulham Football coaches on a Friday afterschool. It is a great way for the girls to finish the week. Again the focus is fun, skill and co-ordination development using a variety of sports skills.

Multi sports Club

In Summer the 4 multisports club starts on a Thursday after school.  Again , every girl is welcome no matter what their skill level.  The main objective is being active and enjoyment.  Sports covered may include:

Years 1 and 2

Netball and Rounders Club

Netball is very popular with the infants as well. For this reason there is a year 1 and 2 club on Tuesdays and Thursdays at lunchtime in Autumn and Spring. In the Summer term this becomes Rounders Club.  The focus is fun, fitness and skill development.

Sports Club

The year 2 sports club is now in full force every Monday afternoon with fourteen keen girls from the two classes developing their skill level in a variety of sports. The focus is to have fun, maintain and improve their fitness levels and to develop their co-ordination levels using a variety of skills. The girls are coached by an experienced Fulham Football coach. The coach is a member of a Premier Womens' Football team here in London. She has a great rapport with the girls and they all thoroughly enjoy themselves.
