History

At Holy Cross our aim is to create a lively and exciting environment in which pupils learn to discover the past for themselves. During Reception, the girls learn about the past within their 'Knowledge and Understanding of the World' lessons. History is taught from Year 1 to Year 6, following the National Curriculum framework.  The girls are taught to understand that history shapes the society in which we live.   We give them the opportunity to learn about the role that individuals, movements and events have played in determining modern society.   The girls study a wide range of periods covering different aspects of British, European and world history.

Our aim is to make history ‘come alive.’ We strive to develop enquiry skills, as well as the pursuit of knowledge. Handling artefacts and looking at sources encourages children to make individual judgements and observations. Through a wide range of activities, for example role play and hot seating, children can place themselves in history. Biennially we have a History Day, where children have the opportunity to dress in role and participate in creative pursuits relevant to the history topic they have studied.

Educational visits to museums and historical sites reinforce classroom learning. Indeed, at Holy Cross we are extremely lucky to have a Hampton Court conduit in our grounds. We feel that awareness of local history is extremely important and makes history seem more relevant to young children. Guest speakers and theatre workshops provide variety and interest.

Ultimately, we want the girls to develop lively, enquiring minds. By gaining both knowledge and skills in history, they can discuss and share their ideas with interest and confidence.
