Geography

At Holy Cross Prep School, geography is concerned with the study of places, the human /physical processes that shape them and the people who live in them. Children study their local area, localities in the U.K, EC and other parts of the world. The children begin by looking at the local area surrounding the school. Only when children have a good grasp of the environment around them will they move on to study and compare this with other locations, either within the country or further afield.
By studying geography, children develop the ability to communicate geographical knowledge and understanding, orally, visually and in writing using appropriate techniques and vocabulary. They will develop enquiry skills by using globes, atlases, maps, plans, information books and a wide range of resources from the internet. The children develop their recording skills by creating and producing maps and plans.

Geography helps children to gain a greater understanding of and respect for the ways of life and cultures of people in other places and by exploring the relationships between places and patterns of human activity. Children will see how humans have shaped and moulded their surroundings with varying effects.
Geography fosters respect for the environment by addressing the earth's resources and the impact of human activities on them. Children acquire skills which enable them to put forward questions and uncover answers to a variety of geographical issues, which will have a huge impact during their lifetime.
