French

All pupils from Reception to year 6 are taught French by a specialist teacher. Our aim is to foster positive attitudes towards language learning by giving all pupils opportunities to enjoy and achieve in their language learning. Furthermore, the children increase their cultural awareness by learning about different Francophone countries and their people.
The main purpose of language teaching is to develop the children’s linguistic competence. Pupils develop language skills, knowledge about language and language-learning skills as they become increasingly familiar with the sounds and written form of French. In Reception and to the end of Key Stage 1, pupils develop listening and speaking skills through rhyme, song, story and role-play. At Key stage 2 pupils use their knowledge with growing confidence and competence to understand what they hear and read and to express themselves in speech and writing, thus forming a sound basis for further study at Key Stage 3 and beyond.

The French room is equipped with an interactive white board and full use is made of the school’s ICT facilities to enhance the teaching and learning of French. Year 6 have a timetabled French lesson in the ICT suite.
An annual residential trip to France is arranged for all pupils in year 6. The pupils not only have the opportunity to practise the language, but also to take part in activities such as learning to play ‘boules’, sculpture, making mosaics, mountain biking, cooking, shopping for and preparing a meal and many cultural visits in the Bourgogne region.

A number of different activities are arranged during the year for example, a ‘French Breakfast’ is organised by Year 6 pupils for their ‘little girls’ and a visit by an interactive theatre company is greatly enjoyed by girls in years 4, 5, and 6.
