Drama

The aim of drama at Holy Cross is to develop self-confidence, self-esteem and freedom of expression, where all girls are allowed to realise their dramatic potential.

Drama is an integral and enjoyable part of the curriculum. The girls have weekly drama lessons with a specialist teacher, and from Reception they take part in a range of activities where they learn different skills and aspects of drama. Children in the infants have the opportunity to act out traditional tales and make up their own versions; older children write their own scripts and consider how to use light and sound effects in a production. The girls are encouraged to use props and costumes to enhance their drama experience.

Drama has strong cross-curricular links with English, history and geography and where possible, the drama that the girls experience, relates to work that they are covering in class.

During the year pupils visit theatres locally and in London. Visiting workshops come in to school for most year groups, and the children get the chance to work with experienced actors and perform in front of an audience.

The girls take part with enthusiasm in school productions and musicals. All classes perform at Christmas; all children present class assemblies during the year; children in year 5 produce a musical play at Easter; children in year 6 put on a summer production and all classes perform biennially at the end of the summer term to the delight of parents and visitors.

There are also opportunities to become more involved in drama through a weekly after school drama club for infant and junior pupils.
