Charitable Links
Holy Cross Prep School strives to realize the potential of each and every pupil. In order to do this we believe in providing an all-round education, which extends far beyond the class room. This means that the school is, and always has been linked with the local community. It is a central part of our ethos that pupils should be engaged with the real world and that when they leave the school they will continue to make a positive contribution to society.
Holy Cross undertakes charity work, both in terms of time and money, at local, national and international level. The school has continued to extend its links and benefits to the local community as well.
Drama workshops during the Christmas, Easter and summer holidays are open to local children through advertising in the free press and posters. Many participate and enjoy the benefits of our facilities. Members of staff from other schools have visited us for professional development. A new initiative has been to offer a place in a strings master class with a music professor for a whole Saturday financed by our school and offered to children in local maintained primary schools. Also we have welcomed pupils from local senior schools both maintained and independent for work experience.
The school participates in the Kingston Heritage weekend every September with the school and grounds open to visitors, with free guided tours of the grounds and conduit monument together with complimentary refreshments.
Local parishioners have continued to enjoy attending our Masses and services. The Holy Cross maintained senior school use our facilities, without charge, for their two retreat days for their students.
Consideration for those less fortunate than us has been demonstrated once again through the outstanding fundraising for charity. Of particular note are the McMillan coffee mornings which have raised over £3,000 each year. Our Lenten endeavours involved each year group organising various activities to raise funds for the Shooting Star Children’s Hospice in Hampton as well as support to Chase children’s hospice near Guildford.
The Friends of Holy Cross had another fruitful year of fundraising, ten percent of which goes to a charity nominated by the parents. This year it is Twenty One & Co. They are a social and support group for children with Down Syndrome and their families in South west London and Surrey. The purpose of the group is to enrich the lives of the children, to offer support to the families, to increase awareness and to educate the community about the presence, the potential and the needs of children with Down Syndrome.
In previous years the Friends have supported schools and orphanages in Africa with financial aid, books and equipment and a school in Venezuela, supplying the children with vital medical and health supplies.
