Sunday Times Prep School of the Year 2013-14

Here at Holy Cross we recognise that science is a fundamental part of everyday life; children are naturally curious and fascinated by everything around them. The study of science helps them answer their “why?” questions and make sense of their world.

Science is a core subject of the National Curriculum and we base our scheme of work on this. We aim to develop our girls’ scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through the three scientific strands of biology, chemistry and physics. We ensure pupils are equipped with the scientific knowledge required to understand the uses and implications of science today, and for the future.

The girls learn techniques of scientific enquiry from asking questions, planning and carrying out investigations, presenting data, making and communicating conclusions, and evaluating results. There is a well-equipped science resource room and full use is made of our extensive grounds which include our own designated mini-beast hunting area, woodland walk, field and two ponds.

The curriculum is enhanced by regular visits; school is situated within easy access of Richmond Park, Wisley RHS, Barnes Wetland Centre amongst others. Year Five pupils spend four days residential in Dorset which includes extensive scientific study of the coast.

Our aims are to develop an enjoyment of science, equip our pupils with sound scientific knowledge and enable them to become confident learners who can think creatively, critically and problem solve.
