Sunday Times Prep School of the Year 2013-14

Art

Art at Holy Cross is taught by a specialist art teacher; year 1 – year 6 girls have an hour lesson each week in the art room. Pre-Prep classes are supported by their TAs. Reception art is an integral part of the EYFS curriculum and as such is part of the girls’ daily learning experience in their classrooms.

A wide range of materials and techniques are introduced to the girls including oil and chalk pastels, pen and pencil, collage, painting and printing. The girls also experience 3D materials with junk modelling, clay and mod-roc. Topics are broad with direct artist links giving a critical context for making. Textiles, fashion drawing, cartoons and graphics give the girls some insight into art in the ‘outside’ commercial, wider world!

The curriculum is extended by inviting artists, illustrators and makers in to talk to the girls, or by going on trips; currently year 3 pupils attend a workshop and gallery session at 'The Lightbox' in Woking.

Art Club runs weekly after school for an hour which pupils can apply to join; there is also a separate Pottery Club. The girls are given an annual opportunity to design and have printed Christmas cards which their family and friends can enjoy. The spacious Coombe Ridge Hall becomes the setting for our biannual ‘Whole School Art Exhibition’ which sees a piece of art work created by every pupil professionally mounted and hung and available to purchase; a true celebration of talent and creativity.

The subject naturally forms strong cross-curricular links with digital drawing in computing lessons, as well as topic-based projects on the Romans and Tudors which are factually explored in their classroom history lessons.

The aim of Art at Holy Cross is to encourage strong and confident expression, in a variety of media, to communicate ideas, feelings and experiences. In Art there is no ‘wrong answer’!
