Sixth in the Country!

Mrs Withers was delighted to report back from the IAPS hockey finals; read her report below.

" 261 schools had entered the U11 IAPS hockey tournament.  Holy Cross qualified for the finals alongside 27 other schools by winning their regional event.  The girls travelled down to Somerset on Thursday evening ready for a days competition on the Friday at Millfield School.

The teams were in 4 pools each playing 6 matches. The girls started nervously and their first match was a draw.  They settled down and with superb skill, great team work, perseverance and encouragement from the side lines they then went on to win two matches, draw one, and only lost one. In order to qualify for the top 8 schools the girls needed to win their last match against Derwent Lodge who were also in contention to go through.  The girls worked hard and kept on the attack and were delighted when they scored off a short corner.  They remained calm and when the whistle blew were delighted to know they had made the top 8.

After a short break the girls came out to play the quarter finals – here they came up against a very strong school and although they fought hard they could not find the goals and were disappointed to lose.  The play offs continued and Holy Cross won one more match and lost one resulting in a finishing place of 6th in the country.  An amazing effort from all the girls".

We are a very successful SIXTH in the country out of 261 schools!

Mrs Hair similarly echoes her delight at the result and extends her warm thanks to all the parental support that made the trip to Somerset happen; the girls were a credit to the school. We all cannot help wonder at potential future success promised by the current all-weather sports pitch development project...onwards and upwards girls and PE staff!
