We Did It!

Mrs Withers reveals her nerve-jangling weekend as the U11 hockey team made a start on defending their IAPS title at the tournament in High Wycombe at the weekend.

"Their first opponents were Downsend school who they had recently lost to and went into the match knowing they had to be on top form.  The girls fought hard the whole way through the match both in attack and defence.  After a very close match the girls were pleased to hear the final whistle, with the score remaining 0-0.  Next they played Gayhurst and had a convincing 6-0 win followed swiftly, with a 5-0 win against the hosts, Pipers Corner.  After lunch they played Highfield again winning 5-0 and then Hall Grove who they beat 6-0.  To win the tournament and reach national finals they had to win their final match against The Oratory who were a strong team.  The girls went 0-1 within a few minutes of play – but they did not let it phase them - they kept on the attack and after half time scored a goal to draw level.  The time was ticking away and we brought up our defence to put the pressure on the Oratory – it paid off and with minutes to spare, we scored a second goal.  Amidst celebrating we still knew we could not let them score again and put 100% effort into keeping the ball away from our goal.  Then the whistle went for full time – we had done it taking the title on goal difference.

We had secured our place at the National Finals in November and defended our Regional title. Well done girls and good luck in November at Millfield in Somerset".
