Sunday Times Prep School of the Year 2013-14

A 'Stellar' Evening of Music

The lucky audience in the Coombe Ridge Hall last night were treated to the most magical, marvellous Spring Concert ever and had to keep pinching themselves to ensure the reality was a prep school with pupils aged from 8 – 11 years performing; the standards were truly incredible. We heard strong soloists on violin and brass instruments, as well as some very confident solo singers. There was a trumpet fanfare to open the proceedings which echoed around us all from the balcony area and played with the acoustics in the Hall. The strings, flute, brass and guitar ensembles all entertained us with a wide variety of music from a range of different periods and styles encompassing Handle, Mozart and themes inspired by contemporary films.

From brass instruments to voice - excellence all round.

The audience may have wondered if the electricity bill had been paid when all the lights in the Hall suddenly went out towards the end of the evening, but when a voice announced, “In a galaxy far, far away the musicians of the Empire gathered...” they realised they were in for a surprise and a truly memorable performance. Marching forms solemnly trooped in and held aloft violin bows as light sabers, accompanying the opening bars of the theme from Star Wars and Mrs Berrow’s advanced violinists played superbly the haunting, rousing familiar tune.

Violin bows make for very effective light sabers!

It was an Albert Hall or O2 Arena worthy performance by all and showcased so much of the musical talent in school, none of which would have happened without the dedication of Mrs Petersons and her fabulous array of visiting instrumental teachers, the parental support at home with practice and the girls themselves committing to their instruments of choice; huge congratulations to all.
